City Attorney Pete Holmes (with I-502 author Alison Holcomb over his shoulder and Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles to the right) addressed the throng of national and international media covering the event, spilling into the right lane of busy 4th Avenue in Seattle’s SoDo District. The Subway restaurant next door sent out employees with ice cold sodas to sell to the people who were waiting in line for their first legal weed purchase. The first person in that line was Deb Greene (how apropos!), a grandmother who claimed to not be much of a pot smoker, but had to come down to experience the historical event for herself. Deb stood with Jeremy Cooper from Magical Butter, the botanical extractor manufacturer that has offices just four blocks away. Deb had been waiting in line since 3pm the day before and had been interviewed by various media, including ABC’s Good Morning America. Deb bought two packages of legal marijuana, eight grams total costing $160 with taxes. She says she plans on keeping one package sealed for posterity, to be passed on to her heirs when she dies. The other package she says will be used responsibly. Alison Holcomb, author of I-502, thanked Cannabis City owner James Lathrop (to her left), the people who worked on the I-502 campaign, and the voters of Washington for making this historic day possible.
